There are no meetings during the winter months. Chapter meetings and evening programs will resume in March.

 

Nora Graf, Master Gardener and Yavapai Gardens Editor, has been working on the Yavapai Gardening Blog. It is a blog designed for Yavapai County Master Gardeners and the public to learn about the latest happenings which may include events, pest outbreaks, new products, useful tips and more. 2011 Fall Programs

Thursday, September 8.  Mycorrhizae: Plant –fungal symbioses and some gourmet mushrooms, Bob Gessner, Ph.D. in botany (mycology), an active member of our local native plant society and retired professor from Western Illinois University, will be the presenter.

Thursday, October 13.  Cacti and Succulents of Big Bend National Park, Gene Twaronite, former junior high school science teacher and retired Instructional Specialist with the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Prescott will be our presenter.  Gene has also recently published his first novel "The Family That Wasn't.”

Field Trips

Grapevine Botanical Area, tentative date, September 24:  The Grapevine Botanical Area is near Poland Junction and is the area where the Prescott Chapter is collecting for the PAPAZ project in 2011.  The area offers chaparral, montane forest, and riparian plant communities.   A canopy of riparian trees lines the narrow canyon of Grapevine Creek. Volunteer opportunity Saturday, September 3

The Prescott chapter of Audubon received an Audubon grant called “Together Green.”  A portion of this grant was used to remove non-natives at the Highlands Center for Natural History at 1375 South Walker Road.  We were invited to participate in this project.  For more information, please contact Cathy Palm-Gessner by email or phone 928-237-1331.

Plant Walks – The winter rains brought many blooms to the Prescott area in May and June.  Several plant walks were taken at Willow Lake in May.  While the goal was to explore the Willow Dells trail most of our time was spent exploring the plant communities on the trail between Heritage Park and the beginning of the trail.  This area had several showy displays as the weeks went by including white tidytips (Layia glandulosa), mallow (Sphaeralcea sp.), Colorado four o’clock (Mirabilis multiflora), and prairie zinnia (Zinnia grandiflora).  In June our walks moved to higher elevations as we explored the Aspen Creek trail where we were greeted by Golden Columbine (Aguilegia chrysantha), butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa), and Arizona thistle (Cirsium arizonicum
